Spring is here, and I couldn’t be more excited. While Spring may mark the start of my favourite season. It also marks the beginning of a very busy agenda. I always find my schedule tends to fill up with a lot of functions during the Spring and Summer months. Between birthdays, barbecues, bridal showers, weddings… and let’s not forget – baby showers. Spring can be a very busy season for many!

This year in particular I have quite a number of bridal showers and baby showers lined up! I couldn’t be more excited to celebrate the guests of honour either. The best part – one of the people I know who is pregnant is my best friend! I am so over the moon for her and her husband!

Quite often, I find her and I chatting about motherhood and the essentials required during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These conversations really got me to reflect on some of the gifts I received when pregnant with my babies. Some gifts weren’t really practical, and while others were just pure genius.

If you are heading to a baby shower in the near future, I highly recommend skipping the stuffed animals, teethers, baby carriers, breast pumps, bottles and teethers.

Rather when shopping for a baby shower, I recommend purchasing these top baby shower essential gifts…

Receiving Blankets. Seriously as a new Mom you can never have enough. They are great for using as a burp blanket, wiping up spit-up, snuggling baby and using as a swaddle. I flew through my receiving blankets with my 2nd and 4th baby – and trust me when I say I had over 25 blankets that saw the laundry every 3 days. It was nuts!

Diapers. Face it – when you have a newborn you are going to go through upwards of 10 to 14 diapers a day. It seems completely unrealistic, I know, but it is true! Most parents grossly underestimate their diaper needs when bringing their new bundle of joy home. Did you know 9 out of 10 mothers wish wish they had included more diapers on their registry? Yep! Not only that 40% of Moms didn’t think to include diapers of varying sizes on their registry! I was once that Mom. I always wished I had asked for more diapers – my favourite is Pampers. It would have made life a lot easier in those newborn days when it wasn’t necessarily easy to leave the house to run out to the store. A great way to gift diapers is by creating a diaper cake!

Spoil the Mom-to-Be. Yes – having a baby can be exciting, but it can also be exhausting. Shower the Mom-to-Be with the ability to treat herself in the days leading up to her baby’s arrival. Whether she opt for a coffee at the cafe, a trip to the spa for a prenatal massage or to get a pedicure… She deserves to be spoiled too!

Gift Cards. When all else fails turn to the almighty gift card. You may think it seems impersonal, but it isn’t. Like I said above, the gifts I wish I had received less of were stuffed animals, bottles, and so on. Not because they weren’t great gift ideas! Because they were, but rather because each baby is different. Not all products will work great from baby to baby, so sure a new Mom may need bottles for her baby down the road, but let her be the one to find the bottle that works best for her and her baby. A gift card is something that would reap great value to new parents.
