This Autumn, The Healthy Shopper has discovered a smarter soft drink swap. Experts at finding ways to “Unjunk your Junk Food,” the health savvy duo of Andrea Donsky, Registered Holistic Nutritionist, and Healthy Shopper co-founder Randy Boyer say “cheers” to Zevia, the first naturally sweetened, zero calorie soda.
Conventional sugary soft drinks and diet soda have come under fire a lot lately. “Now, conscious consumers and concerned parents on the hunt for healthier alternatives, don’t have to pass on soda,” says Boyer. Zevia offers zero calorie, naturally sweetened drinks that are now Non-GMO Project Verified. Zevia is clear and doesn’t contain any caramel color or chemically processed artificial substitutes like aspartame or Splenda found in diet sodas. Zevia is sweetened with Stevia, a little green plant from the sunflower family that is originally native to South America. The stevia leaf is up to 200x sweeter than sugar but has no caloric value or effect on blood sugar levels.
Zevia comes in a variety of flavours such as Cola, Black Cherry, Ginger Ale, Ginger Root Beer, and Cream Soda with 11 varieties total available in Canada. Zevia can be found at most major grocery retailers at the approximate price point of $5.99 for a six pack.
As someone who loves to enjoy a soft drink from time to time, I have to say I was pretty excited to test out Zevia. I had been eyeing the product at my local grocery store for quite sometime, but could never bring myself to try it. Until now.
Does Zevia replace my favourite Cola? Honestly, I can’t say it does. I enjoyed Zevia, but I found the flavour to differ greatly. Zevia is a great alternative, if you are looking to avoid artificial substitutes and colorants. It is also a safe soft drink to consume in moderation during pregnancy.
