How many hours of sleep do you average each night?

Probably not the recommended amount, right?!

Prior to my pregnancy, I was notorious for heading to bed shortly after midnight and waking at 6 each morning. Throw what felt like a million toddler wake-ups in the middle of night… and really who knows how little sleep I would be surviving during the day-to-day. Heaven knows that it was far from the recommended 7 to 8 hours sleep a night.

Sleeping like a baby… Is that even possible?!?

What I hadn’t realized was that unwinding the hours before bedtime could do wonders. I have made some simple changes to my before bed routine, and I’ll tell you when I climb into bed each night I’m fast asleep within minutes. This never used to be the case. I would thrash, and toss and turn for hours. Not anymore.

Here are some tips that are guaranteed to have you counting sheep and drifting off to sleep in no time:

Establish a regular bedtime: Try to go to sleep and wake up at the same time each day, even on the weekends. Trying to catch up on sleep on the weekends can actually have a reverse effect on the body, and make you feel more tired when Monday rolls around.

Create a sleep haven: Create an environment that promotes sleep – one that is quiet, dark, cool and comfortable. Fresh sheets, cooling pillows and black out shades seem to do the trick. There is nothing more that I love than climbing into a bed made with sheets fresh out of the dryer. Heavenly, I tell you!

Fill the air: Incorporate soothing fragrances into your bedtime routine to help relax and unwind.

Did you know that Febreze has released a knew Sleep Serenity Collection? Febreze Sleep Serenity collection’s calming scents in Moonlit Lavender, Warm Milk & Honey and Quiet Jasmine help create a soothing bedtime atmosphere.

Exercising: Getting your body moving is one of the best things you can do to help you sleep. Exercise anytime, as long as it doesn’t cut into your shuteye. I like to sneak in my exercise during the morning or early afternoon, as I find evening workouts hamper with my bedtime routine and leave me energized. It’s a personal preference which will vary greatly from person to person.

Nighttime beverages: Avoid drinking caffeinated drinks such as coffee, tea and soft drinks after noon. Caffeine-free herbal tea or warm milk are greaSt options prior to nestling into your sheets.
