The dinner hour is always a gong show around our house. Let’s face it – anytime between 5PM and 7PM is the witching hour. My son is going through a case of the terrible two’s, and is either having an epic freak out as I try to cook dinner or clinging to my leg begging me to pick him up. Keeping the kids distracted and occupied as I try to cook dinner is key.

Yesterday, I made up some DIY Moon Sand, also known as Cloud Dough. Moon Sand is moldable sand. It’s kind of like playdough, but a tad bit messier. I would prefer to keep Moon Sand as an outside activity, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. I’m willing to make exceptions and have a mess in my house if it amounts to having happy kids, and dinner eventually on the table.

Moon Sand is a great sensory activity, as well.

Moon Sand
8 cups of flour
1 cup of baby oil or vegetable oil
A few splashes of essential oils (optional)

The directions are quite simple. Combine the flour and oil. Add a splash or two of essential oil if you would like. Easy peasy!

My daughter loves when I splash a bit of food colouring in to the the moon sand to create “coloured sprinkles” (as she likes to call it).

Next time you’re looking for a way to keep your little munchkins occupied for an hour or so, try your hand at Moon Sand. It’s affordable, and so much fun for the wee ones.
