Mainstream music is defined as “music that is familiar and unthreatening to the masses, as for example popular music, pop music, middle of the road music, pop rap or pop rock”.
When I first started this challenge I never anticipated having to touch on such controversial topics. Normally I wouldn’t touch on these subjects on my blog… however for the challenge I will participate.
I happen to like a lot of mainstream music. I see nothing wrong with it. While I may not appreciate every song or every artist… I know someone else does. Whatever. To each their own. We are all entitled to have our own taste.
This being said, I don’t agree with all the singles that are played over the airwaves. I may like said songs, but I don’t agree that it is something that the younger audience should be subjected to. There are many a song that contain explicit lyrics and/or sexual content. While the artist may be subtle with the lyrics…. it still isn’t something you’d want your child to get stuck in their head.
I’m not going to turn into some preacher about this topic. Why? Simply because I know I’m guilty of letting my children listen to these songs in my presence. I may also be guilty of listening to songs with the occasional swear word in front of my children too. Gasp. We have an open relationship and we discuss these things.
Sex is always going to be present in the media. Be it mainstream or not. It’s a fact of life. It’s not something that can just be avoided. You may shut it out, but it will always be there.
I could go on and on about this topic, but I’d rather not ensue a debate.
