Summer happens to be one of my favourite seasons. It is a season where most of my fondest memories have been made.

During my childhood, I spent many of Summers exploring the great outdoors, visiting fairs and festivals, attending camps and visiting with my Great Grandmother. It was not often that you would hear me utter the words “I’m bored”  and if I did it was with great reason.

Rain was quite often a culprit of my Summer boredom. I didn’t care if it did wonders for hydrating the plants and grass. It always dampened my spirits.

It wasn’t until I was introduced to the Choose Your Own Adventures line of books that I was able to work through my boredom on those dreary Summer days. There was always something so comforting in curling up under a blanket, listening to the rain and reading a book where I choose my fate. I often choose the adventures that were reminiscent of tales ones would tell while sitting by the campfire late in the evening.

How would you kill time during your Summers holidays as a child? Did you ever read the Choose Your Own Adventure books?

My children are still too young to delve into these books, but that hasn’t deterred them from enjoying the ability of choosing their own story line(s) through interactive storytelling on Netflix.

Interactive Storytelling launched in June on Netflix. It allows children to be in complete creative control of what their characters end up doing and saying by giving them the ability to choose from multiple paths for their favourite characters to play out on screen. With so many endings and choice points, it allows children to watch the same title over and over, without the need of hearing or seeing the same exact story over and over again. Consider it a gift of constant discovery for them, and reprieve for mom and dad!

As of right now, there are two interactive shows to choose from Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile and our personal family favourite, Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale.

So on that next rainy day beat the case of the rainy day calls of boredom by putting your child in the directors seat. Who knows what epic adventure may unfold!

Disclosure: I am a member of the Netflix Stream Team. Compensation has not been provided, but I do receive special perks as a part of my affiliation with this group. All opinions are those of my own.
