The countdown is on! Christmas is just 20 days away! Have you started your holiday shopping yet?

Regardless of if you have or not use the holiday season as a time to reconnect with your family. After all the holidays aren’t about the gifts. They’re about spending quality time with the ones you love most.

Quite honestly, I look forward to the holidays for the simple fact that I know that my husband will get a few days away from work to spend at home with the kids and I. We don’t plan much around the holidays. We don’t travel. Rather we just like to hang out at home and just be present. There is nothing more that I could want than to enjoy being in the moment with my family. What could be better?!

In the days leading up to Christmas we love to countdown to the big day that Jolly Ol’ Saint Nick rolls into town.

For that reason, I have compiled the ultimate list of advent activities and fun ways to countdown to Christmas to share with you…

Tour the Christmas Lights. Grab a warm cup of cocoa, load the family in the car, crank the Christmas music and take a drive around town to enjoy taking in all the Christmas lights.

Advent Calendars. Nothing beats picking up that chocolate advent calendar from your local retailer. This is something my children look forward to enjoying each day leading up to Christmas.

Beer Advent Calendar. For the ‘bigger kid’ in your life. Pick up 25 cans of your favourite beers, wrap them up and have the recipient open a can a day leading up the the holidays. The same could be done with tea, coffee or wine.

Book Advent Basket. Stop by the dollar store and pick up 25 children’s books. Wrap them up individually and tuck them into a basket nestled by the Christmas tree. Have your child open one each night to read with you before bed for each day leading up to Christmas.

Purge the Toy Room. Clean your toy room or bedroom, and purge the rooms of any unwanted toys. What is old to your child can be new to another. Donate these items.

Adopt a Family. Adopt a family in need this Christmas to help make their Christmas a little better. It is necessarily about the gifts, but also providing them with support, basic necessities and hope to get through the holiday season.

Raid the Pantry. Raid the pantry of canned goods and donate them to a local food bank. Even more you could offer your time as a family volunteering at the food bank sorting through the goods.

Plan an Annual Cookie Baking Day. The holidays can be crazy busy. Make time to enjoy time bonding with your little ones in the kitchen baking up some of your favourite holiday treats. Like these Kris Kringles for instance.

Elf on the Shelf. Countdown to Christmas with some merry mischeif from the Elf on the Shelf. Use some of these ideas to get you started.

Netflix Christmas Countdown. Netflix, your faithful friend, has put together a Holiday Streaming Calendar full of awesome content to watch! It’s like an advent calendar, but better – all the excitement, none of the calories. Unveil a new holiday or binge-worthy title on the service every day for a relaxing and festive month. Towards the end of December, get excited for 2017 with Netflix’s New Year’s Eve countdowns!
