The journey into motherhood is one that can be not only exciting, but also overwhelming. I can vividly remember when I was pregnant with my first. I had all these preconceived notions of how I would parent and all of the essentials I would need to get us through those newborn stages. Really I had no idea at all!

I can remember sitting down to work on my registry for my baby shower, and feeling so lost. Many of my friends at the time that weren’t Mom’s, and the few Mom friends I did have were just learning the ropes and settling into life with a newborn. I never had that seasoned Mom to fallback on for advice.

When planning my baby shower gift registry, I eventually wound up taking a stab at what I would need. Adding products like bouncer seats, swings, infant seats, and a bath tub to the registry.

Now that I reflect back on my choices, I realize that many of them were not practical. You never truly know what your baby will like until they are in arms. None of my children have ever really liked the bouncers or infant seats

Rather the gifts I found that came in handy were receiving blankets (I really should have asked for more!), swaddling blankets, car seat, additional car seat bases, stroller, pump and bottles.

And, let me tell you I am not the only Mom who think these products are essential. In a recent study conducted by TripleScoop Premium Market Research titled, “Baby Gifting – The Bizarre, the Useful and the Needed” they found that…

  • 70%  of Moms felt that diapers would make a great gift,
  • 63% of Canadian Moms will thank you for onesies while 57% of Canadian Moms will happily accept toys or books and baby clothes,
  • Meanwhile over half of Canadian Moms will be grateful for bedding, blankets and swaddling blankets.
  • Furthermore 42% of Canadian Moms would graciously accept a car seat while 40% feel a stroller would be cut out to be a great gift.

If there is anything I have learned in my 7 years of motherhood, it is that many have no idea what to purchase a Mom-to-be for a baby shower. gift. They always gift with the best intentions, but the reality is that over half of gift givers don’t usually realize that the gift they are giving is impractical.

Trust me – I was there when I received a baby shower gift that was full of teddy bears. The gift giver meant well, but really what is a new Mom going to do with 15 teddy bears?! They would just be tucked away to collect dust. Sad reality, but true.

One of the best gifts to offer in my opinion would be a pump (if the Mom plans to breastfeed), as well as PlaytexBaby™ products, like bottles. The PlaytexBaby™ Nurser Bottle happens to be a favourite of mine.

And, if you are still feeling weary with these gift ideas, it never hurts to opt to give a gift card to the mom-to-be. This way she can shop for what she needs once the baby is born. In fact just over 6-in-10 Moms find a gift card to be quite useful!

So the next time you are invited to a baby shower and you aren’t sure what to get, I hope you will take into account some of the tips provided in this article and give a gift that mom and baby really need.
