Tomorrow will mark one month since I received the approval to jump back on the fitness bandwagon postpartum. Something I looked forward to doing with great anticipation. Of course I knew my journey back into fitness wouldn’t be easy. It never is when you are trying to balance life with little kids and/or a baby, especially when the new schedule is coming into play. A schedule that is forever changing with the baby.

Getting back in the fitness groove post-baby

I’ll start off by saying that this month, I lost a total of 13.75 inches, 7 of which were around my waist. I am not sure how much weight I have lost… Or if I have even lost any weight, but to be honest that number on the scale doesn’t even matter. What matters is that I am feeling happier, healthier and stronger than ever. It is a pretty fierce feeling. One that is definitely contributing to keeping me motivated.

I am not going to say that this past month has been easy because by any means it has not been.

I joined Royally Fit Online, and have some incredibly badass online personal trainers that provide great support, amazing workouts (3 a week), and guidelines to creating a healthy meal plan. I only managed to do a handful of Royally Fit’s workouts this month, Between a terrible head cold that knocked me off my feet for days, food poisoning and dealing with a baby that has colic the struggle to get in a workout has been real. I have been rolling with the punches, and finding ways to work around it.

Often when I haven’t been able to fit in a workout, I will find time to head out for a walk or jog. My little guy loves when I put him in the swing and jog in place in front of him. He finds it hilarious, and I love it because it allows me to get my heart pumping and the endorphins flowing for 10 to 15 minutes at a time.

Other days – the harder days – you will find me bouncing on my stability ball with the little guy for hours upon hours. I spent a lot of time on the stability ball during my pregnancy with Oakley. It is no different now. It happens to be his calming place. One that brings him much relief from his colic, and allows me to focus on strengthening my pelvic floor, core and legs. That’s just an added bonus!

Getting back in the game though hasn’t been all about fitness. It has also been about creating a healthier eating habits. I’ll be the first to admit that I was not taking care of myself in the early postpartum days. I binged on junk all of the time. Some days I wouldn’t find time to eat over the day. My eating habits were taking a downward spiral. It has taken time to get into a groove, but I am getting there. I find my cravings for junk are slowly being curbed.

I start each day with warm lemon water and green juice, following which I will enjoy my morning coffee and oatmeal with chia seeds. For snacks, I will usually opt for some fruit. I have found the fruit has been a great substitute for when I crave something sweet. As for my other meals, I make sure they have an ample amount of protein and fiber. I need my energy while I breastfeed! Avocados have become like a staple in my day-to-day diet. I also drink 3 to 4 liters of water a day. What can I say — breastfeeding makes me thirsty!

Another thing I like to enjoy each afternoon is an ND Shake. ND Shakes are packed with protein, whole greens, fruit, vitamins and minerals, as well as cinnamon for balanced blood sugar, cranberry for a healthy urinary tract and added calcium for great bones.

And – usually before bed I will sip on a MagPop! MagPop combines combination of magnesium, vitamin C and electrolytes. It’s a great fun and fizzy way to sneak in the magnesium glycinate that my body needs while also rehydrating my body. It has helped to reduce muscle discomforts, relieved stress and has improved my sleep greatly. And, we all know how important sleep is! MagPop is something I will also enjoy on the days that I do a high intensity workout, as well.

However, I am not going to sit here writing and act like I don’t still binge from time to time. I am only human! Of course, I still sneak in the sweets and junk from time to time. Heaven knows, you could never separate me from my chips and dip. Same goes for wine and beer. I am just learning to enjoy in moderation. It is all about balance. I like the 80/20 approach. Sometimes it may be more like 65/35… But hey – balance is balance! I aim to be accountable, keeping healthy snacks prepared and on-hand, and meal planning helps too.

As you can see this past month has been a journey. One with only one goal in mind. A goal to live and maintain a healthy lifestyle that can ensure that I can be at my best to care for my children. The last thing I care about right now is losing weight. I am on this journey because I love how making simple changes and living a more active lifestyle makes me feel. I’m walking away from this month feeling strong and happy. What better feeling is there than that?!
