There is no denying that getting the cold of flu while pregnant is the pits. I know firsthand… I am battling a raging head cold as we speak. Hooray!

However, the reality is that whether you are pregnant or not getting sick just sucks. No one ever has time for being sick and worn down, but when the cold and flu strike you just got to roll with the punches, take care of yourself, rest and hopefully you will bounce back sooner rather than later.

This year, it is anticipated that the cold and flu season will hit later than normal with it’s peak season being February. The good news is that with the delay in cold and flu season, this has granted many family’s more time to prepare and try to ensure that their family stays healthy.

Did you know that there are over 100 different viruses that can cause a cold? Pretty crazy, right?! From a runny nose and itchy throat to cough, congestion and fever symptoms, a cold or flu can leave you feeling miserable for more than a week.

This is why my family stocks up on many essentials that not only help to prevent the spread of the cold and flu, but also allow for quick recovery and long-lasting relief should a cold or flu virus make it’s way into our home.

Here are 6 key items that you will find in our ultimate cold preparation essentials kit:

  1. Vitamins and supplements. Our home is well-stocked with products like Orange Naturals Immune Health, Echinacea, Oil of Oregano Cold + Flu Tincture, L’il Critters Immune C Plus Gummies for Kids, Vitamin C, Garlic Capsules, Zinc and a good multivitamin. Some of these products we consume on a daily basis. Other products like the Echinacea, Oil of Oregano or the Cold + Flu Tincture we take the moment cold or flu symptoms arise.
  2. Lysol Wipes, Spray and Disinfectant Spray with Hydrogen Peroxide. I make a point to wipe down and disinfect all common areas (like bathrooms, tables, counters, door handles and light switches) each night when the children go to bed and each morning after they leave for school.
  3. Pure Apple Cider Vinegar. Taking a tablespoon or two at the onset of a cold can help a full on bout of feeling like crap. Apple cider vinegar helps to alkalize your body. The more alkaline in your body helps prevent and fight off viruses like the cold and flu. If drinking apple cider vinegar isn’t your jam, you can dilute it with 8oz warm water and a tsp of honey. This is a great way to soothe a sore throat too!
  4. Maintain a well stocked medicine cabinet. Always have the basics like Tylenol and Motrin on hand for when pain or fever relief may be needed. We also like to keep products like Benadryl (this helps soothe a scratchy throat when paired with Tylenol or Motrin), Vicks, throat lozenges, and Gravol on hand. If you are pregnant, you can seek relief during cold or flu. If your symptoms are really out of hand, you can call Mother Risk for guidance on medication that may be safe for you to take during pregnancy.
  5. 999999-0032878522766_PackageBraun ThermoScan Ear Thermometer. This thermometer provides an easy and efficient way to read your child’s temperature. We lover the built in nightlight. It makes it great for night readings. The small, flexible pre-warmed tip also provides comfortable and accurate temperature reading.
  6. Vicks Sweet Dreams Cool Mist Humidifier. Research has shown that maintaining indoor humidity levels between 40 to 60 per cent reduces the survival of flu viruses in the air. We have a cool mist humidifer for each one of my children that they use each night, not just when they have a cold or the flu.pTRU1-22414688_alternate1_dt A cool mist humidifier helps kids breathe easier by adding essential moisture to the room to maintain ideal humidity levels. The bonus with the Vicks Sweet Dreams humidifier is that it also doubles as a projector that offers three dream inspired scenes including Safari, Sea and Starry Night. My toddler absolutely adores this feature, and finds it soothing on just about any night.

Lastly, the only other tip I would suggest is to stay on top of hydration! Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. Remain accountable of how much water you are drinking each day. Water helps flush out any toxins that may be trying to invade your immune system. Additionally, aim to maintain a healthy, well-balance diet, exercise daily and get the amount of sleep your body requires! These are all great measures you can take to try to stay healthy in cold and flu season. After all the last thing anyone wants to do is be sick! So stay of head of the game, and keep your health and your family’s on the top of their a-game!
