I’m 34 weeks pregnant! Can you believe it?!?

Well… if you want to be exact… I’m technically 34 and a half weeks pregnant!

34 weeks pregnant

We are getting into the final stretch. With only 39 days to go (give or take), my midwives now have me actively beginning to prepare for the impending birth of my little man. Currently, we are crossing our fingers and toes that the little guy gets the memo and stays put for at minimum two more weeks. I’m high risk for preterm labour, unfortunately. Thankfully, all that means is that I have had to slow down, cut some losses in the process (I no longer write for YMC) and listen to my body.

In the meantime, I’m also starting to prepare my home birth kit. Yes, I finally got the go ahead from my midwives to have another home birth warranting I make it to term.

I’m also gearing up to do my Group B Strep swab at my next appointment.

For those who are not aware,  “Group B Strep is a type of bacteria that may populate the body, typically in the rectum.  It can migrate to the vagina in women.  It’s usually transient, meaning it comes and goes for most women (which is why testing before 36 weeks is thought to be inaccurate).”source: Natural Birth and Baby Care

In hopes to prevent Group B Strep from colonization, I have been taking a cocktail for the past few weeks. This cocktail is meant to help boost the immune system in order to help prevent GBS colonization. The cocktail regime includes taking:

  • Echinacea tincture, daily
  • Garlic capsules, daily
  • Vitamin C, 250mg 4x daily (I take this via capsules and Orange Naturals MagPop!)
  • Probiotics, daily

You start taking this cocktail around 32 weeks until your swab around 36 weeks, and it is proven to help you test negative for Group B Strep.

So I guess the big question… How am I feeling?

Well, if you remember during my last update at 25 weeks I informed you all that I was having a pretty rough go with this pregnancy.

It has been almost 10 weeks since that update, and I wish I could tell you that I am feeling better. However, the reality is that if anything I feel worse than I did before.

Around 27 weeks, I took a bad spill down an entire flight of stairs while holding my 2 year old. The fall was caused by “sudden drop syndrome” resulting from sciatica nerve pain. I had just happened to have been getting my daughter out of the bath at the time, and was heading downstairs to grab a diaper when my right leg went completely numb and gave out. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Thankfully, my daughter was ok, but I injured myself during the fall. I walked away with a bruised tailbone, back, whip lash, as well as abdominal and pelvic tightening that lasted well over a week. It landed me on modified bed rest for quite some time while I healed.

Since the fall, I have struggled with being able to stand for more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time without being in debilitating pain. Thankfully when the nerve pain gets really bad, I have Orange Naturals Sciatica tincture on hand, which I can take orally and it offers some temporary relief.

Between the sciatica pain, I have also had to deal with major digestive issues caused by a uterine fibroid. The fibroid has also brought on a lot of back pain and abdominal pain in addition to the bathroom issues. It has been something that has not been easy to live with, but I have been doing a lot of research and I am starting to understand how to manage some of the symptoms. Green tea, shots of pure apple cider vinegar and coffee with coconut oil (2 tbsp) all seem to be really helping relieve some of the symptoms. Not entirely, but just enough to take the edge off.

AND – if having sciatica nerve pain and a uterine fibroid isn’t enough, I also am still struggling with the oh-so-glorious all day sickness. You know the sickness that leaves you not wanting to eat anything. Seriously, I cannot stand the look of meat or even the smell of it. I live for produce and plain pasta… Oh and cheese. Lot and lots of cheese! Macaroni and cheese is my favourite!

Seriously though, I know my pregnancy sounds like it must be absolutely miserable. At times yes, I feel like it is. I am not going to lie. However, it is also a time that I have relished in. I have really enjoyed this beautiful gift of being pregnant again. Everything from the baby kicks to the ever-growing belly to the joys of having my husband cater to my every Kelsey’s Spinach Dip craving. We really should take out a stock in Kelsey’s with how often he has had to pick me up Spinach Dip.

This has been a time in my life I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I know all to well what it feels like to be on the other end of the totem pole. I have had my share of tears and frustrations while dealing with secondary infertility, and it wasn’t pleasant. Nor would I wish it on anyone. Ever.

So while this pregnancy may not be symptom free and easy, I am feeling absolutely grateful for what it is. The symptoms are only temporary and soon enough I will get to hold my little guy in my arms. That’s what will make all the hard days so worth it and rewarding.

I may be having a minor panic attack knowing that my due date is quickly approaching and that I will in fact have to go through labour again. However, I am trying to shift my focus and not think about that, but rather just enjoy these last few weeks of being pregnant one last time.

Now that I have provided you all with the update you are looking for… I am off to unwind with my trusty glass of MagPop! Probably the one and only thing that almost guarantees I get a decent few hours of shut eye each night. We all know how much I love my sleep!

I keep hearing about the importance of magnesium and feel that I am probably deficient. So this would be a great way to get some magnesium.

I follow a low carb diet which tends to result in a lack of magnesium, so I have to supplement it. I am interested in trying it out and seeing how well it works for me.

What interests me most is that I have many of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency- low energy, fatigue, anxiety, etc- so this would be great to try to kick me into high gear for the day.
