There is something just so special about the holidays that I always look forward to. It’s a time that is not about the gifts, but rather spending time with the ones we love most and making not only memories, but also creating many annual traditions.

A tradition that I have grown to love over my many years is one that falls on the Eve of Christmas.

The tradition first started when I was a young child. My Nana would always come over and spend the evening with us at my parents house. We would snuggle up and watch Miracle on 34th Street while tracking Santa via NORAD on the radio. My Nana would always try to bribe my Mom into letting me open the presents she came bearing, but my Mom would always insist we wait until Christmas morning. I was allowed to open just one present on the Eve of Christmas, and it was always a present that I looked forward to. We called it a “tree gift”, if you will. The gift would always include a new pair of PJs, a mug, a package of hot chocolate and a new book.

The years have now gone by, and just 3 years ago we said goodbye to my Nana after a short battle with ALS, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t keep the tradition going and my Nana’s legacy alive.

My children are now thrilled to take part in this annual tradition. The only difference being that nowadays we track Santa via NORAD on our Android Smartphones. Oh how the times have changed!

I remember the year my dad bought him a real Christmas tree. It was the only year we had a pine tree and it was amazing. We hand tinsel all over it and the smell was so wonderful.

One of mine is the year it snowed on Christmas Day when our relatives were visiting from Australia – it was very special for them to have their first, and only, white Christmas. We live on the West Coast where it almost never snows for Christmas, so it was special for all of us.
