The arrival of spring often means a change in our routine as we break out of the winter blues and begin soaking-up the sun and enjoying warmer weather again!
As we bid farewell to winter, we welcome the next season with an important family tradition—spring cleaning! With the kids no longer tracking in slush on their boots, we can celebrate packing away bulky snow suits and store them away for next winter.
Each Spring, I also shift my Spring cleaning focus to the kitchen. Here are a few simple tips to get you well on your way to a more organized and decluttered kitchen:
Defrost and deep clean your freezer. Remove all products in your freezer and defrost your freezer. Once the freezer has been defrosted give it a deep clean. This will be your opportunity to toss any expired frozen meats, products and unwanted leftovers. You will be truly amazed by the waste one can accumulate in their freezer.
Pull out all major appliances. Every once and awhile it has to be done. Why not use Spring as your reason to do it? Pull out your major appliances and vacuum and wash the floors in behind them. The amount of food, dust and in my case, dog hair that gets trapped beneath and beside my major appliances is disgusting.
Purge and reorganize your pantry. My pantry is a disaster at the best of times. However, each month I try to make a point to pull everything out and toss expired canned goods. In addition to this during Spring cleaning, I always try to reorganize the pantry to make it more workable. Storing spices on a pull out tray, and pastas and cereals in airtight containers.
Label your spices. Place a label on the lid of each of your spices. Identifying the type of spice, as well as the expiry date. Most spices won’t maintain shelf life for more than 18 months.
Try to stick to the first in, first out rule. Make a point every time you stock your pantry, fridge or freezer with new product to make sure you remember to use the older items first.
Clear out the fridge. Remove everything from your fridge. Discard of any expired food, condiments and drinks. Give the interior of the fridge a good wipe down.
Deep clean your oven. Most ovens are self cleaning, so be sure to run the self-cleaner from time to time. Also, take the time to grab a sponge and clean the inside of your oven too.
Clean your screens. If your house is like mine, you access your backyard by exiting through the kitchen. Make a point to remove the screen from your sliding glass door and cleaning it. You can wash it down by using a sudsy mixture of water and Dawn Ultra Original, and giving the screen a good spray of water following.
Clean your kitchen floor, back splash and baseboards. Makea point to wipe down your walls, back splash and baseboards with water and Dawn Ultra Original. Tackle your floors using a Swiffer WetJet or a steam mop with water mixed with vinegar.
