11 years ago today, I went on my best (and last!) first date.
I can still remember the night as if it were yesterday. My Mom had been so eager for me to go on the date with James. Suffice to say I had dated a so-called bad boy for 6 months before dating James. My Mom was constantly on my case, and nitpicking. She even banned me from seeing my boyfriend before James entered the picture. She could not wait for me to experience a good guy. So when I told her I was asked out to a movie with James (a University student… bear in mind I was still in high school) she was all for it.
The night of our date was a whirlwind. I remember telling James that odds are I would be babbling from nervousness. It was quite the opposite. James had told me he would pick me up between 6:30-7. To this day I still tease him for being so precise about wanting to pick me up at “6:37” on the dot. Upon James pulling into my driveway for our date, I was standing on the driveway scolding my little brother for burning ants with a magnifying glass. Of course to James it looked like I was a crazy lune, pointing her finger angrily at the ground and babbling away. My brother was tucked in behind my Mom’s car out of sight.
For our first date, we went to see a movie. I didn’t want to be the girl that suggested a romantic comedy, so I let him pick the flick. He picked Star Wars Episode 2: Attack of the Clones. Did I mention I had never seen any Star Wars films prior to this one? Yea – that was something else. During the movie we had our first of many pecks. After all I had been into “this boy” for many years. He was my reading buddy many moons ago. That’s a whole other story!!
After the movie we went back to James’ house to play some pool. It was at that point that we decided to make it official and start dating! It didn’t take long after that for me to realize that what we had was rather special. I feel in love hard and fast! I hate to admit it, but my Mom was totally right. You know a good guy, once you’ve got one.
11 years later, we now have 6 years of wedded bliss under our belts and 2 children. I’m still head over in heels in love with “that boy”, and happier than ever.
Love you, James!
