Now that it is the holiday season, it is very easy to become overwhelmed and fall victim to the stress of the holiday hustle and bustle. Between Christmas shopping, and planning out how and when you will find time to ready your home for gatherings with friends and family… preparation is key.

Colin Cowie, lifestyle expert and celebrity party planner, recommends five simple tips that Canadians can us to help ready their homes for the busy holiday social season:

Start with a Colour Theme.
What is your holiday colour scheme this year? Ours is pink, deep purples and hues of green. If you don’t have a colour scheme in mind… Think about going the route of red and gold or white and silver. Both of those pairings  are perfect for a holiday party. Be sure to incorporate your colour scheme into everything from your invitations to your decor.

Good Lighting is a Must.
Use lights on dimmers. We have dimmers in our family room and adjust the lighting to suit the mood. It really gives an overall ambiance. In addition, you can adjust the lighting in the room by simply adding some candles. There is no such thing as too many candles. Don’t be shy to place votives, pillars and tapers anywhere throughout your home. You can also use scented candles, such as Febreze Candles to add to the ambiance or as a part of a festive centerpiece. Candles also make great stocking stuffers or party favours.

Let Guests Help Themselves.
Sit down dinners can be intimidating. My family has always been one to set up various food stations around the kitchen and dining room. The food stations include holiday classics, like: turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and all the other fixings. The food stations include cutlery, napkins and dinnerware and allows guests to help themselves. As a host, it also gives you the chance to kick back and enjoy the gathering a little because everything will be ready to go (pretty much) when your guests arrive.

Always Be Ready for Guests.
Do you have an area in your home where you stash away your floor cleaners? I have all my cleaners stowed away in the hall closet and under my kitchen sink. Always in easy reach. Consider keeping a Swiffer WetJet and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on hand this holiday season that way if you receive that impromptu phone call that you have friends or family on their way over, you can clean up in a jiffy. Your home will be freed of unwanted dust and footprints – and always guest ready!

Hide the Mess.
Pre-load the dishwasher with Cascade All-in-1 ActionPacs and load dishes as you use them. If you need to wash dishes use a fast-acting dish soap like Dawn Original, it gives you an overnight soak in five minutes, so you can plan to spend the night with guests instead of stuck scrubbing dirty dishes.

I hosted our first of many Christmas dinners last night. I had my home ready in no time with my holiday collection of P&G products.

We always have a lot of unannounced visitors during the Christmas season. I try to always have on hand some items to throw together for them to nibble on. Plus, we always use the Febreze candles so my home always smells yummy!

I did a major clean before setting up the tree & decorating. I still need to do the baking. Can’t do that too early or I might have to do it twice!

We have the Christmas tree up, lights in windows and other decorations. We celebrated an early Christmas with family in November so the house has been festive looking for a few weeks already.
